A Community Mental Health Team - 822 Words

During my time in practice with a community mental health team in the Northeast of England I came across a lady in her mid-twenties who had just recently gave birth to a child. My mentor and I had to go and assess her due to her showing symptoms of postnatal depression, it was important to assess the safety of her and her new-born child and to see if she was able to care for the child. NICE guidelines have set out guidelines which help us as nurses identify maltreatment, nurses and other healthcare professional must always be aware of potential signs of neglect and abuse of children, looking out for poor hygiene, bruising, parents cancelling or missing their appointments and failing to seek appropriate healthcare. We have a responsibility to Act as advocates for children whilst being clear with our professional boundaries, making appropriate referrals to safeguarding/child protection wherever necessary (Peterborough Safeguarding Children Board, 2008). When assessing a caregiver we should be assessing how the caregiver communicates with the child verbally and non-verbally, assessing how the individual shows warmth towards their child and their ability to respond to the child’s need. If the caregiver is unable to do this we must assess if there is another responsible adult present to support them (Cassell and Coleman 1995).
